Enjoy Norway's Vesterålen

Damperiet, restaurant and rorbuer
Enjoy Norway
From january 2014, "Norway lovers" will be able to enjoy the Vesterålen, where I'll be running a restaurant and some cottages at a place called "Damperiet". It's situated along the Straumfjorden. Together with the Lofoten and Senja, this archipelago is one of the most beautiful parts of Norway. That's my humble opinion of course. But I am very eager to share my passion.

Beautiful....

....view on the fjord
....mountains, fjords, (killer)whales, midnightsun, northernlight.... you are surrounded by it all at Damperiet in summer resp. winter. You can go hiking, fishing, canoeing or just sit and relax while enjoying this little piece of heaven. You can stay at one of my 5 old fishermen cottages, which are common in this area. All of them are similar on the outside but completely different inside; old atmosphere but provided with modern facilities.

How to get there.
The Vesterålen can be reached by car. The fastest way to get there, is through Sweden. Beautiful, but much slower (believe me, it's worth it!) is the trip through the  Norwegian scenery. Both ways are quite a few kilometers.
If you want to get there much faster you can reach the Vesterålen by plane. There is an airport in Evenes, between Narvik and Harstad. where you can rent a car  and a 2.5 hour drive will take you to Paradise called "Damperiet".

Cottages

Rorbuer
Marelius bua
The cottages, once built as accomodation for fishermen who came to to the archipelago for their annual fishingjob, are very popular these days. For the Norwegian as well as the foreign tourists. That popularity urges to book trips, accomodations and flights early.

Livingroom Bardo bua

Spending your time in a “rorbu”, as they are called in Norwegian, you will experience the way of living in an area which used to depend on what the ocean provided. Harvest a bit of that is still possible: on your own, or joining a local fisherman on a trip on the ocean using a fishingrod.

My 5-7 persons fishermanscabins are different on the inside, but all of them have a livingroom, modern kitchen, bathroom and at least 1 bedroom.
All cabins are isolated and a woodstove provides warmth during the colder period.

Good Fishing

The Vesterålen used to depend on fishing and it still is an important source of income, although not at the same scale. The vessels are larger and there are less small fisheries. Fishing in the Vesterålen fortunately is still very good, for professional fishermen but also for the "anglers".

Large quantities of goodsized cod, but also coalfish, pollack, redfish and the biggest challenge… the halibut: a huge thrill to catch on the rod. Quite common, but only caught by luck. Halibuts ranging from 80 cm to even above 2 meter. You may wonder whether you should want to catch one. It is a real challenge, for the halibut is not only very tasty, but also very big, heavy and incredibly strong ..... and hardly takes notice from the muscular and euphoric fisherman who is trying to drag it in.

In the fjord, but in particular where the sea enters the fjord, it's good fishing. Where the rough ocean begins, big fish rule beneath the waves. You can experience beautiful days at sea, in a little boat or with professional fishermen. Enjoy good catches, sea eagles and other beautiful animals in their habitat. And afterwards, after eventually cleaning the catch, enjoy a nice glass of wine and great stories about the huge halibut that was…. nearly caught!

How to get there

"A great place to be. If I go to Norway I would like to rent a cottage overthere. Would that be possible?"  "Yes of course?" "Where?" "HERE! " "And with who?" "Me!" ...

....I once wrote on my blog when it all wasn't quite certain that I would actually get the chance of exploiting this place "Damperiet". But that was then....

And now I can offer you a cabin....

The Vesterålen are easy to reach by car. That is to say.... easy roads, but long.

view while driving through Norway
Driving through the beautiful norwegian scenery is quite a pleasure and very recommendable if you got the time. You can enjoy the most spectacular views. If you want to travel faster you can choose Sweden, up north and then cross Sweden and enter the northern part of Norway.

Flights: The SAS and Norwegian.com have daily flights from several places in Norway. Heading from your place you will probably have a stopover in Oslo.
On Evenes Airport, in the middle between Narvik and Harstad, you can rent a car. It will take about 2,5 hours to get to my place.

Bœr kommer tilbake til Bø

I den engelske Wikipedia står det:

The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old Bø farm (Old Norse: Bœr), since the first church (Bø Church) was built there. The name is identical with the word bœr which means "farm" and it is a cognate with the Dutch language word "boer" which means "farmer".[4] Legg merke til skrivemåten: en sammensatt bokstav: œ!

Damperiet i Bø (2013)
